Get in the driving seat and host your own online English speaking club about..... anything you want!
If you are a newly qualified teacher, a language enthusiast, or simply someone who wants to give English language learners the chance to speak, then you’ve come to the right page.
We are open to those who would like to host their own English Speaking Club or English Conversation Club – whatever you call it in your country - using, Skype, Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, but before you can do that, we ask for a few things. Before you go any further, I should make it clear that all speaking clubs will be FREE. Yeah, you won’t make any money from them, I won’t make any money, but you will be rewarded by the feeling you’ve done a good thing.
So, what do you need to do?
Firstly, you will need to create the speaking club / conversation club you want to host. Choose a minimum level and a topic and ideally create a PPT – presentation - based around that topic. If you’d rather not have a PPT, then come up with a list of questions for your topic that would be enough for an engaging 60-minute speaking club. When deciding on the speaking club you are going to host, ask yourself, do you want it to be one group with you hosting and directing the questions to the attendees or do you want to put them in small groups, let them enter break-out rooms, and discuss your material among themselves and then report back to you.
Next, you’re going to need a Google Form so people can sign-up. Mine looks like this. It’s recommended that you email anyone who signs up for your conversation club to confirm their place and then send a group email 24 hours before your speaking club starts to give them a reminder.
Once your conversation club is ready, it’s time to get it listed on this site. Fill out the I want to be a host form and I’ll get back to you within 24hours. We can then meet on Zoom for a quick 10-minute chat about your speaking club and then 15 minutes before your speaking club is about to start, we’ll connect to Zoom, I’ll give you the host rights, and then I’ll disconnect from the call. Of course, if you plan on doing your conversation club on Skype, Google Meet, Teams or another platform, then you’re the boss!
We recommend you list your conversation club 7 days before the start day/time.
You’re probably wondering who your students will be and who will sign up. It’s hard to say, at the moment the site gets over 1000 hits a month from people all over the world. When I run my speaking clubs, the majority of people who attend are from Eastern Europe, but that hasn’t stopped students before from South American, Africa, and Asia attending.
Your speaking club will be listed in the table on the main page and from that, students will click OPEN and then be directed to your speaking-club-host-profile page which will look something like this. They can then sign up via your Google Form link there.
Remember, the key element here is to give people the chance to speak! An opportunity to use their spoken English skills in a relaxed-friendly-fun atmosphere and if you think YOU can create such an environment, we would be happy to host your online English speaking club.
